1903/04 was a breakthrough season for Watford FC in many ways. John Goodall, one Britain’s most famous footballers of the day, was appointed as the club’s first Manager by Chairman and benefactor Ralph Thorpe. With added funds from Thorpe, Goodall made a number of new signings, 8 of which made their debut on the first day of the season. Among them was Scot George Badenoch, to whom this medal was awarded.

Watford won the Southern League Division 2 at a canter, with both Harry Barton and Bertie Banks averaging a goal (or more) a game. The ‘Wasps’ final record in the league was:

Played 20, Won 18, Drawn 2, Lost 0, Goals for 78, Goals Against 14

The medal bears George’s initials on the front (GHB), which have obviously been added after the medal was awarded. At some point the medal was converted to a badge, which sadly destroyed part of the rear side.

As for George himself, sadly, he was to go on the serve in the Great War and was killed by a shell in the trenches.
